The Kirkwood provide specialist care, free of charge, to adults in Kirklees with advanced, progressive illnesses at any time from diagnosis to the end of life, respecting their individual needs and wishes. Care and support is also provided for their family members, friends and carers, both during the illness and after death. Through education, training and partnership with others, we improve care for everyone affected by a life limiting illness. 



  • Assist the Head Chef and Sous Chef in the preparation and presenting of all food to the highest standard to meet the needs of the hospice customers- patients, visitors, staff, and volunteers – including the cooking of some basic food dishes.
  • Serving and dispatch of all types of meals and beverages when required.
  • Ensuring that all food is provided at the correct time and to the standard specified by the Cook in charge.
  • Cleaning of catering areas, equipment & utensils to specified hygiene standards.
  • Assisting the Head Chef and Sous Chef to check the quality & quantities of deliveries and ensuring storage of stock items.
  • Basic record keeping such as fridge temperatures throughout the catering department
  • Work co-operatively with other members of the catering team, contributing to effective team working. Demonstrate own activities and provide guidance to new or less qualified employees as required
  • The reporting of mechanical and electrical defects as per Hospice policies
  • Any other duties required for the smooth running of the catering department specified by the Head Chef and Sous Chef, additional duties may be required to cover sickness and holiday absence of colleagues
  • Complying with all relevant policies and procedures and taking part in training activities to support personal development needs and those of the catering team/service. This will include the basic use of IT to enable the completion of mandatory e-learning education programs.
  • Communicate and provide information on the food service to patients, staff and visitors, this includes taking food orders.
  • Assist with the development of the service through positive participation in any new ideas and sharing own ideas for service improvement.
