Foundation Learning Students Steam Ahead with Rail Safety Project

Share:

This month, the Foundation Learning students on the Personal Skills and Adult Skills course have been working on a rail safety project with the Penistone Line Partnership.

Penistone Line Partnership is one of the longest running community rail partnerships and celebrates its 30th anniversary next year! Its aim is to encourage train travel but also to ensure the railway is seen as inclusive part of the communities along the line. This week is Community Rail Week which aims to encourage as many people as possible to ‘try the train’.

As part of Community Rail Week, our Foundation Learning students visited Huddersfield Train Station to look at various key features, including where they can buy tickets and ask for information and help. They also had a talk from the Community Rail Officer, Rowena Chantler, to help build students’ confidence and make sure they stay safe in the train station.

The department has also organised some trips on the train to Barnsley for a group of Adult Skills learners and three groups of students on the Personal Skills course.

Students on Personal Skills and Adult Skills, along with those attending a Community Crafting evening course, have also created pieces of artwork for the Jubilee that will displayed at the station. The artwork is currently on display at platform two at Huddersfield Train Station ready for the Jubilee.

Rowena Chantler, Community Rail Officer from Penistone Line Partnership said:

“It has been a delight to come in and share both the Rail Safety message and promote some rail confidence to the students. Catching the train for the first time can be a daunting task, we aim to promote train travel to as many people as possible. The students I engaged with were an absolute pleasure to spend time with and I look forward to accompanying them on a train trip!” For more information about Foundation Learning courses at Kirklees College, visit https://kirkleescollege.latestbuild.dev/subjects/foundation-learning/.
